What is BPC-157?

BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a peptide made up of 15 amino acids. It's based on a protein found naturally in the stomach.

It's one of the most widely discussed peptides for recovery and is often used for localized support at the site of an injury.

What the research is looking at

BPC-157 is being studied for its role in:

  • Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels
  • Tendon and ligament repair
  • Gut protection
  • Inflammation at the site of an injury

That's why BPC-157 comes up so often in conversations about localized recovery.

Most of the research so far has been in the lab and in animals. FDA's scientists noted that human data is still limited, and more research is underway.

Where BPC-157 stands with FDA

On October 28, 2026, HHS announced it does not intend to take enforcement action against state-licensed compounding pharmacies that compound BPC-157, while FDA goes through the formal rulemaking process to decide whether to add it to the official 503A compounding list.

This is not FDA approval. BPC-157 is not an FDA-approved drug.

It's an interim policy that HHS says it may revisit at any time, for example if a safety or quality issue comes up. Formal rulemaking is expected to take about 12 to 24 months.

Under the HHS policy, BPC-157 (acetate) is covered for subcutaneous, intramuscular, oral and topical use, as a single-peptide product.
