Updated October 29, 2026.
Not part of the Oct 28 HHS policy. Compounded PT-141 is not Vyleesi, is not a generic, and is not FDA-approved.
What is PT-141?
PT-141 is the research name for bremelanotide, a peptide that works on melanocortin receptors in the brain.
Unlike many sexual health medications, it doesn't work mainly on blood flow. It acts on pathways in the brain involved in desire.
What the research is looking at
Bremelanotide has been studied in two large clinical trials of more than 1,200 premenopausal women with low sexual desire.
In those trials, women who used it reported more desire and less distress about low desire than women on a placebo. It did not increase the number of satisfying sexual events.
Research in men and in postmenopausal women is smaller and earlier.
Who it may be for
Adults who are bothered by a drop in sexual desire often ask about PT-141.
Our provider will talk with you about whether it fits your goals and health history.
Regulatory status
Bremelanotide is the active ingredient in Vyleesi, a brand-name drug FDA approved in 2019 for one specific use: premenopausal women with acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD).
Vyleesi is not approved for men or for women after menopause.
Compounded PT-141 is not Vyleesi, is not a generic version of it, and is not FDA-approved. FDA has not reviewed compounded PT-141 for safety, effectiveness or quality.
PT-141 is not part of the October 28, 2026 HHS peptide policy. Its compounding status falls under general federal and state compounding rules, which may change.
Safety and side effects
In the Vyleesi trials, the most common side effects were:
- Nausea (about 4 in 10 women), most often after the first dose
- Flushing
- Redness or soreness where it's given
- Headache
- Vomiting
It can also cause a short-term rise in blood pressure, and darkening of the skin in some people, especially with frequent use.

Common questions
How is PT-141 different from ED medications?
Medications for erectile dysfunction work mainly on blood flow. PT-141 works on pathways in the brain involved in desire.
Is this the same as Vyleesi?
No. It's the same active ingredient, but compounded PT-141 is a different product and is not FDA-approved.
How often can it be used?
PT-141 is used as needed, not every day. Our provider will give you personalized dosing and limits, including how much time to leave between doses.
What if I get nausea?
Nausea is common, especially the first time, and often improves with later doses. Let our provider know if it's severe or doesn't go away.
