Updated October 29, 2026.
Not part of the Oct 28 HHS policy. Compounded tesamorelin is not Egrifta, is not a generic, and is not FDA-approved.
What is tesamorelin?
Tesamorelin is a peptide modeled on growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), a hormone your body makes naturally.
Like sermorelin, it signals your pituitary gland to release your own growth hormone rather than supplying growth hormone directly. It's built to be more stable in the body than natural GHRH.
Why patients ask about it
Patients often ask about tesamorelin for body composition goals, especially abdominal fat, and for general growth hormone support as they age.
Results vary from person to person, and our provider will talk with you about whether it fits your goals.
Regulatory status
Tesamorelin is the active ingredient in Egrifta, a brand-name drug FDA approved in 2010 for one specific use: reducing excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy.
Compounded tesamorelin is not Egrifta, is not a generic version of it, and is not FDA-approved. FDA has not reviewed compounded tesamorelin for safety, effectiveness or quality, and it has not been approved for any other use.
Tesamorelin is not part of the October 28, 2026 HHS peptide policy. Its compounding status falls under general federal and state compounding rules, which may change.
